Welcome Parents and Guardians!
There are two things you can do to help your student scientist experience a
wonderful Expo:
1. Provide encouragement and support to your scientists
- Assist them in searching for a topic. What most interests them? Would they
like to do an experiment or demonstrate the science behind something that
sparks their interest? Would they like to invent something new to solve a problem?
- Take them to the library to explore their idea.
- At the library or at home help them navigate the Internet to track down
ideas to help them in their investigation.
- Encourage them to think of something new or an enhancement to an idea they
found elsewhere; don't just repeat an experiment they found on the web.
- Provide an area at home for them to work
- Let them do the project. One of the most common problems students
face is having Mom or Dad do the project for them. Let your scientist explore,
learn, and produce the display. Give them encouragement and honest feedback;
but let them do it. They will learn more--and they will be proud of what they
accomplished.
2. Volunteer: Be a part of the Expo Committee
There are lots of opportunities to help make the Expo fun and exciting for
the scientists at Baileywick Elementary School. Whether you have an hour, a day, or a week
to help, we have something for you to do to enrich the students' experience.
We've listed some of the activities below that may interest you. It's cool,
it's exciting, and you can't beat the rewards (you get a free cookie at the
Expo). Pick your area of interest and come help us out!
Does your employer support science fairs? Do they have giveaways that the students
might like? At past Expos, kind corporations donated rulers, erasers, T-shirts,
toys, tradeshow giveaways, calculators, pens, post-it pads, and a ton of other neat loot the kids loved getting
for participating in the Expo. Do they support their employees to do demonstrations
or serve as evaluators? Seeing the company where Mom or Dad works support their
children's activities sets a wonderful example for community involvement and
makes the Expo that much more exciting to the students.
